Prioritize Peace with a Refreshed Relaxation Space
•Posted on January 15 2025
Especially after a busy year, taking time to relax is critical, but that’s much easier when you have a peaceful home. Now, few of us have the time or energy to turn our entire home into a zen-zone. But a dedicated relaxation space is the next best thing. Whether it’s your bedroom, your bathroom, or your own special part of the house, take the opportunity to refresh it for the new year and revitalize your energy at the same time.
Here are a few of our favorite ways to turn your relaxation space into a serene and inviting retreat for the year ahead.
1. Create a Calming Ambiance
When it comes to relaxation, mood lighting is everything. You don’t want harsh overhead lighting to kill your buzz or cause a headache. Instead, opt for warm, calming light tones and place them strategically around your space.
Dimmable lamps are an excellent option for multi-purpose spaces like a bedroom where you need extra lighting outside of relaxation times. But we can’t deny the magic of string lights around the ceiling and walls or the calming effect of floating candles in a bowl of water. Just be sure to choose something that speaks to your relaxation side, works with your space, and doesn’t take too much setup when you need it.
Another great way to bring the atmosphere together is with soothing scents that evoke calm and happy feelings. An essential oil diffuser or scented candle are fantastic options for infusing your space with your favorite scents during relaxation. But if you’d prefer your space to have a calming smell all the time, opt for potpourri in a bowl that complements your space’s décor.
2. Optimize Your Space
A cluttered space is rarely a happy one, so be sure to keep your relaxation area picked up without sacrificing the essentials you need to relax. We love the KonMari method for this—particularly asking whether it sparks joy. Because if it doesn’t make you happy, it doesn’t belong in your recharge space.
If you need some storage solutions, we love the convenience and minimalist feel of rattan baskets. These versatile baskets work for everything from cozy blankets and extra pillows to books, art supplies, spa materials, etc. They also work great for “hiding” any extra items you have to store in your relaxation space but don’t want visible.
Finally, be sure your recharge room has functional furniture. You need more than just an old chair you pulled out of the garage. Invest in yourself with comfy seating that aids relaxation and makes your space feel welcoming and cozy. You can also consider multi-functional furniture like storage ottomans to add more organization or a convertible chair that lets you lounge at whatever angle suits you best.
3. Bring Nature Indoors
Science shows that nature can reduce anxiety and stress while boosting our mood and overall well-being. That sounds like the perfect addition to a refreshing space!
If you have a green thumb (and your space has enough natural light), consider bringing some low-maintenance house plants into your space. We also love the no-maintenance touch of an artificial lavender plant paired with lavender essential oils to double down on its calming properties.
But there’s more to nature than plants. Sunshine is also proven to boost moods and recharge us, so don’t block it out! Use sheer curtains to invite that warm, sunny light into your space. You can even use mirrors to amplify it and give your space a calming glow.
Refreshing your personal relaxation space for the year ahead doesn’t have to be hard! Just choose a few things that exemplify the energy you want to bring into the new year, find a place for them, and ditch anything that belongs back in 2024. Then, set aside intentional time to utilize your space throughout the year, enjoying the mental and physical benefits of seeking peace in this crazy life!
